Albert Einstein's Fascination for the Indian Mahatma

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany, on March 14, 1879 and died in the United States on February 18, 1955. He lived for 75 years and is known as the greatest scientist of the twentieth century. Mohandas Karmachand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born in Porbandar in Gujarat state of India, on October 2, 1869 and died in Delhi on January 30, 1948. He lived for 78 years and is recognized as the greatest political leader of the twentieth century.

Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi were very important personalities of the twentieth century and the Time magazine selected Albert Einstein as man of the century. Mahatma Gandhi came in second place. If Mahatma Gandhi had been selected as man of the century, Einstein would have come in second place. As the fields of activities of the two personalities were different, both were on top of their respective fields.

The year 2005 saw the 50th anniversary of Einstein's death and the 100th anniversary of the publication of his three papers through which the scientific perspective in the world has changed. Einstein became famous by defining the new theories of space and time and introduced new concepts that gave birth to new ideas in science. As the father of the theory of relativity and the godfather of the theory of quantum physics, he introduced new perspectives that have completely changed the science and technology over the past 100 years. It is interesting to know that although he was a scientist by profession, he observed and followed closely the activities of others such as the ideas and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi that had great impact in the political world during his time.

Einstein and Gandhi had one thing in common: both had an unusual appearance. While Einstein was a scientist, he looked like an artist or a philosopher. Mahatma Gandhi was a political leader but looked like a farmer or a saint of India. This feature, unorthodox in appearance, would have led these two great men to amuse and admire each other. Both of them were loved by the cartoonists. On one occasion, when the German ambassador came to see Einstein, his wife suggested to him to put on a suit. Einstein replied that if the ambassador wanted to see the suit, he could see it in the closet, but if he wanted to see him, let the ambassador meet him as he dressed. When Gandhi went to London and it was suggested to him that he should put on a suit for the meeting with the Emperor, he replied that if the Emperor wanted to see the suit, he will sent it, but if the Emperor wanted to meet him, he would be dressed in his usual loincloth.

Although Einstein never met Mahatma Gandhi personally, he was aware of the activities and impact of Gandhi not only in India but in the world and knew the wider impact it will have on the future of humanity. Einstein saw death, destruction and devastation in the two world wars, and he became a fighter for peace and admired the non-violent technique of Mahatma Gandhi to achieve political objectives. In the nonviolent method of Mahatma Gandhi, Einstein found a message for humanity in its political struggle. In a letter he wrote clearly: "I do not miss any opportunity to make people take cognizance of the great possibilities offered by the method of Gandhi who gives moral, intellectual and independent strength to the minority of people."

Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi both denied that the non-violent struggle is an act of cowardice. In case of need and to uphold the highest values, both supported violent methods rather than submit to injustice and domination by the unacceptable and unprincipled forces of evil. Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt of the United States suggesting to develop the nuclear weapons before Hitler did. Gandhi adored and was inspired by the holy book Bhagavad Gita that advocates violent struggle to preserve the moral and ethical principles. Neither Gandhi nor Einstein believed that struggle against evil is a violation of the principle of non-violence.

Both Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi believed in the pursuit of truth. Einstein focused his work in the field of science to find the truth and reality in the physical world. He found new concepts of time and space. His theories of Special Relativity and General Relativity provided a new perspective that is closer to reality. Truth for Mahatma Gandhi, however, was not in the field of science but in the reality of human values, morals and behavior. The devotion and adherence to truth in their respective fields suggests a natural affinity between the two personalities.

Einstein saw the consequences of intolerance among people of the countries engaged in the two world wars. He was the victim of anti-Semitism in Germany. According to Einstein's vision, tolerance towards the views of others is crucial for the survival of humanity. Mahatma Gandhi also faced the divergent political, religious and linguistic differences in India and had the tremendous task of bringing together people with different ideologies. The independence struggle of India against the colonial power could not succeed if the people who were fighting for independence quarreled among themselves. Consequently, he preached religious and political tolerance.

Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi had different views on religion but their commitment to the deep spiritual and moral values was unquestionable. As a scientist, Einstein did not follow a particular religion or ritual in the daily life as Mahatma Gandhi did. Einstein, nevertheless, acknowledged the existence of a mysterious spiritual power that governs the universe.

It was his fascination towards the spiritual values that led Einstein to find in Mahatma Gandhi a symbol worthy of admiration and emulation. That is why he considered Mahatma Gandhi as "the only truly great political figure of our age". Einstein's biographer has recorded that he kept in his study room in the United States only two portraits – one of Mahatma Gandhi and the other of Dr. Schweitzer, a German musician. For Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi represented the highest example of human relations in the political sphere to which all human beings should aspire. Einstein was, however, aware of the fact that the political and moral standards set by Mahatma Gandhi were very high and not easy to follow. At one occasion he stated that for future generations it will be hard to believe that a great leader like Mahatma Gandhi in flesh and blood ever walked on the earth.

Albert Einstein on Indian Mahatma

  • Taken on the whole, I would believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence for fighting for our cause, but by non-participation of anything you believe is evil.
  • Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth.
    • Albert Einstein, statement on the occasion of Gandhi's 70th birthday (1939); Einstein archive 32-601, published in Out of My Later Years (1950).
    • Variant: Generations to come, it may be, will scarcely believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.
  • Everyone concerned in the better future of mankind must be deeply moved by the tragic death of Mahatma Gandhi. He died as the victim of his own principles, the principle of nonviolence. He died because in time of disorder and general irritation in his country, he refused armed protection for himself. It was his unshakable belief that the use of force is an evil in itself, that therefore it must be avoided by those who are striving for supreme justice to his belief. With his belief in his heart and mind, he has led a great nation on to its liberation. He has demonstrated that a powerful human following can be assembled not only through the cunning game of the usual political manoeuvres and trickeries but through the cogent example of morally superior conduct of life.
The admiration for Mahatma Gandhi in all countries of the world rests on recognition, mostly sub-conscious, recognition of the fact that in our time of utter moral decadence, he was the only statesman to stand for a higher level of human relationship in political sphere. This level we must, with all our forces, attempt to reach. We must learn the difficult lesson that an endurable future of humanity will be possible only if, also in international relations, decisions are based on law and justice and not on self-righteous power, as they have been upto now.
    • Albert Einstein, as quoted in Mahatma Gandhi and the U.S.A. (1949) by Pasupuleti Gopala Krishnayya, p. 399

[Thought of the Day] A seed to plant.....

A successful business man was growing old and knew it was time to choose a successor to take over the business. Instead of choosing one of his Directors or his children, he decided to do something different. He called all the young executives in his company together. He said, 'It is time for me to step down and choose the next CEO. I have decided to choose one of you. 'The young executives were shocked, but the boss continued. 'I am going to give each one of you a SEED today - one very special SEED. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from the seed I have given you. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next CEO.' One man, named Jim, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his wife the story. She helped him get a pot, soil and compost and he planted the seed. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other executives began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Jim kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by, still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Jim didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went by -- still nothing in Jim's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Jim didn't say anything to his colleagues, however. He just kept watering and fertilizing the soil - He so wanted the seed to grow. A year finally went by and all the young executives of the company brought their plants to the CEO for inspection. Jim told his wife that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But she asked him to be honest about what happened. Jim felt sick to his stomach, it was going to be the most embarrassing moment of his life, but he knew his wife was right. He took his empty pot to the board room. When Jim arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other executives. They were beautiful -- in all shapes and sizes. Jim put his empty pot on the floor and many of his colleagues laughed, a few felt sorry for him! When the CEO arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted his young executives. Jim just tried to hide in the back. 'My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown,' said the CEO. 'Today one of you will be appointed the next CEO!' All of a sudden, the CEO spotted Jim at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered the Financial Director to bring him to the front. Jim was terrified. He thought, 'The CEO knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me fired!' When Jim got to the front, the CEO asked him what had happened to his seed - Jim told him the story.. The CEO asked everyone to sit down except Jim. He looked at Jim, and then announced to the young executives, 'Behold your next Chief Executive Officer! His name is Jim!' Jim couldn't believe it. Jim couldn't even grow his seed. 'How could he be the new CEO?' the others said. Then the CEO said, 'One year ago today, I gave everyone in this room a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds; they were dead - it was not possible for them to grow. All of you, except Jim, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Jim was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new Chief Executive Officer!' * If you plant honesty, you will reap trust * If you plant goodness, you will reap friends * If you plant humility, you will reap greatness * If you plant perseverance, you will reap contentment * If you plant consideration, you will reap perspective * If you plant hard work, you will reap success * If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation * If you plant faith in GOD, you will reap a harvest So, be careful what you plant now; it will determine what you will reap later. 'Whatever You Give To Life, Life Gives You Back'

Why do we shout in anger?

Why do we shout in anger?
A saint asked his disciples, 'Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?' Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.' 'But, why to shout when the other person is just next to you?' asked the saint. 'Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you're angry?' Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint. Finally he explained, 'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.' Then the saint asked, 'What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, why? Because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small...' The saint continued, 'When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, only whisper and they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they only look at each other and that's all. That is how close two people are when they love each other.'

8)
In his latest movie "Dasavatharam" in 2008 he mentioned about a deadly virus, which spread via air, that may destroy the world. Now in 2009 we have the Swine Flu that spreads through air. And to be specific, in the movie Kamal develops a bio weapon and finds out the deadly effect of the virus in a lab in America. Now the first case of Swine Flu was detected in Mexico (America).  WHAT DO U CALL THIS ----- "A COINCIDENCE"?

Swine Flu, Nilgiri Oil and the Faux-SMS

Bangalore, 11/12 August 2009

The "Indian Silicon Valley" is now in 'panic'. The pandemic of swine flu has got the better of the outwardly modern Bangaloreans. You see boys and girls promenading through the air-conditioned malls in their trademark tight jeans, with inane slogans blazed across their t-shirts. Now, after the swine-flu, they have an extra-fitting added - a mask. It looks like they have taken a fancy for this stuff. With the mask, they now look exactly like pigs!

swine-fluThe morning newspapers scream that the swine flu toll has risen to seven. According to one newspaper the total number of positive cases of the viral disease detected in the country as on 10 August 2009 stood at 864 and the number of confirmed cases in Karnataka stood at 92. (Deccan Chronicle, Bangalore, 11 September 2009). Schools in the city are reported to have been closed.

After having had a light-hearted discussion in the morning with a colleague about the irrational behavior of those who are affected by the fear of swine-flu, I was jolted in the afternoon by a cell-phone SMS that reads: "Pass this message to everyone. Use 'Nilgiri Oil' drops on handkerchiefs and masks as one of the preventive measures against swine flu (NIV) - National Institute of Virology."

The National Institute of Virology in Pune is a pre-eminent institution in India, doing solid research in viral infections and other related fields. And here is a message straight from the horse-mouth advising me to panic and make others panic! As a common man with scanty knowledge of viral infections and the possible medical properties of Eucalyptus Oil (commonly known as Nilgiri Oil in this part of the world, though the tree is not indigenous to Nilgiri Hills, or even India), what should I do? Should I forward the message to my colleagues, friends, and relatives to save them from an imminent attack of the deadly swine-flu? Here is a simple remedy available even in provision stores and with street peddlers! These were the thoughts that flashed across my mind in an instant. Having come across innumerable hoax emails and SMS messages, I refused to buy this message from my friend. Instead of forwarding the SMS to anybody else, I texted her this message: "I don't believe it without verifying its authenticity". (As a pleasant surprise, she replied me back: "I knew your answer"!)

Knowing that NIV would definitely have this panacea endorsed in their website, had the SMS been authentic, in the evening, when I got sufficient time to access the internet, I googled for the website of National Institute of Virology, Pune. When the page opened up, the first thing I noticed was a scrolling text (html marque) at the bottom of the page in bold red letters. And it read:

NIV has not recommended any indigenous formulations like Nilgiri oil, etc as use against novel H1N1 (Swine Flu). Please refer to authentic public health information or call the help lines for queries.

Who would have created this faux-message in the name of NIV? A canny crook in the marketing arm of a Nilgiri Oil manufacturer? A prankster? An anti-social, sadist who derive erotic pleasure in creating panic? Or, a practitioner of alternative-medicine a la Aromatherapy who genuinely believes in their snake-oil panacea? Whoever it be, they would be chuckling sitting in some corner of our country, having immensly succeeded in their effort. In this SMS world, the message spread from one part of India to another, from one 'IT capital' to another 'IT capital'.

swine-flu-virusjpsWith the timely intervention of the NIV, one would have thought this faux-SMS would stop to have any effect on the people. Not really, it seems. The panic generated and sustained by the sensationalist media is such that the people continue to believe it despite NIV's denial. For instance, my friend who sent me the SMS yesterday and who was informed about NIV's denial, came to the office today splashing her duppatta with Eucalyptus oil!

In due course this panic will slowly die out, but we should continue to be agitated by the tendency of the people to be carried away by rumours. We witnessed similar hilarious antics earlier too, when people 'fed' litres of precious milk to Ganesha idols; when they rushed to the seashores of Mumbai to collect "sweet water" and even fed it to their toddlers!

Why do people behave like suckers, fall for every 'miracle", every other quack medicine, without bothering to verify whether it is correct or not ? Why do they instinctively forward ridiculously silly chain-letters claiming miraculous benefits if forwarded to a certain number of persons or wrath of this or that deity if not done?

It seems to me, most of those who fall for these things belong to the same category of people who refuse to employ their critical thinking skills regarding the religion and related belief systems with which they are brought up. And irrational behavior in such a predominant area of one's life will necessarily leave some marks on other areas too. I also believe that critical thinking is a skill that can be acquired. One need not wallow in the marshy land of superstition and rituals forever.

Udham Singh, an Hero to Remember! - Happy Independence Day!

Hi Dears,

I wish to share this piece of article about an Hero who really deserves to be remembered and honoured in the day of Independence.

Udham Singh, an Hero to Remember!

Udham Singh (December 26, 1899 – July 31, 1940), born Sher Singh Jammu, (Kamboj) was an Indian independence activist, best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer in March 1940 in what has been described as an avenging of the Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre. Singh was also known as Ram Mohammed Singh Azad, symbolizing the unification of the three major religions of India: Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism. Singh is considered one of the best-known of the more extremist revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle.

After the death of their parents, with the help of Bhai Kishan Singh Ragi, both Sher Singh and his elder brother, Mukta Singh, were taken in by the Central Khalsa Orphanage Putlighar in Amritsar on October 24, 1907. While at orphanage, Udham Singh was trained in various arts and crafts. He passed his matriculation examination in 1918 and left the orphanage in 1919.

On April 13, 1919, over twenty thousand unarmed Indians, mainly Punjabis, peacefully assembled in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, to listen to several prominent local leaders speak out against British colonial rule in India. Udham Singh and his mates from the orphanage were serving water to the crowd on a warm summer afternoon. The troops of 90 soldiers armed with rifles and short swords, had entered the Bagh by about 5:15 PM. With no warning to the crowd to disperse, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to open fire, concentrating especially on the areas where the crowd was thickest. The attack lasted ten minutes. Since there was only one exit not barred by soldiers, people tried to climb the walls of the park. Some also jumped into a well inside the compound to escape the bullets. Official estimates put the figures at 379 killed (337 men, 41 boys and a six week old baby) and 200 injured, but other reports estimated the deaths well over 1,000 and possibly 1,300. Official figures say that 1,650 rounds of ammunition had been used.

Udham Singh mainly held Michael O'Dwyer responsible for what came to be known as the Amritsar Massacre. New research supporting this fact reveal the massacre to have occurred with the Governor's full connivance "to teach the Indians a lesson, to make a wide impression and to strike terror through-out Punjab". The incident had greatly shaken young Udham Singh and proved a turning point in his life. After bathing in the holy sarovar (pool of nectar), Udham Singh took a silent vow and solemn pledge in front of the Golden Temple to wreak a vengeance on the perpetrators of the crime and to restore honour to what he saw as a humiliated nation.

Singh plunged into active politics and became a dedicated revolutionary. He left the orphanage and moved from one country to another to achieve his secret objective, aiming ultimately to reach his prey in London. reached Africa in 1920, moving to Nairobi in 1921. He returned to India in 1924, reaching the U.S. that same year. He returned to India in July 1927 on orders from Bhagat Singh. He was accompanied by 25 associates from the U.S. and brought a consignment of revolvers and ammunition. On 30 August 1927 Udham Singh was arrested at Amritsar for possession of unlicensed arms. He stayed in jail for four years, missing the peak of India's revolutionary period and the actions of men like Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad. Bhagat Singh was executed at the gallows with his fellow revolutionaries Raj Guru and Sukhdev on March 23, 1931 for the murder of Mr. Saunders, while Udham Singh was still in jail.

Udham Singh was released from jail on 23 October 1931. He visited his native village in 1933, then proceeded to Kashmir on a clandestine revolutionary mission, where he was able to dupe the police and escaped to Germany. Singh ultimately reached London in 1934 and took up residence at 9 Adler Street, Whitechapel (East London) near Commercial Road. According to the secret reports of British Police, Singh reached London thru Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria.Despite numerous opportunities to strike, Singh awaited a right time when he could make more impact with the killing and internationalize the event.

At last, the opportunity came on 13 March 1940, almost 21 years after the Jallianwala Bagh killings: A joint meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society was scheduled at Caxton Hall and among the speakers was Michael O'Dwyer. Singh concealed his revolver in a book specially cut for the purpose and managed to enter Caxton Hall. He took up his position against the wall. At the end of the meeting, the gathering stood up, and O'Dwyer moved towards the platform to talk to Lord Zetland. Singh pulled his revolver and fired. O'Dwyer was hit twice and died immediately. Udham Singh did not intend to escape. He was arrested on the spot. His weapon,a knife, his diary, along with a bullet fired on the day are now kept in the Black Museum of Scotland Yard.

Singh explained his actions to the court at his trial: "I did it because I had a grudge against him. He deserved it. He was the real culprit. He wanted to crush the spirit of my people, so I have crushed him. For full 21 years, I have been trying to wreak vengeance. I am happy that I have done the job. I am not scared of death. I am dying for my country. I have seen my people starving in India under the British rule. I have protested against this, it was my duty. What a greater honour could be bestowed on me than death for the sake of my motherland?"

This groundswell of anti-British feeling, say many historians, served as the launch pad for Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India movement launched two years later in 1942, that triggered the end of British rule in India just five years later in 1947, culminating in Indian independence on Aug. 15, 1947.

In July 1974, Udham Singh's remains were exhumed and repatriated to India at the request of S. Sadhu Singh Thind, an MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi at that time. He asked Indira Gandhi to force the then-British Government to hand over Udham Singh's remains to India. Sadhu Singh Thind himself went to England as a special envoy of the Indian Government and brought back the remains of the Shaheed. He was given a martyr's reception. Among those who received his casket at Delhi airport were Shankar Dayal Sharma, then president of the Congress Party, and Zail Singh, then chief minister of Punjab, both of whom later went on to become Presidents of India. Indira Gandhi, the prime minister, also laid a wreath. He was later cremated in his birthplace of Sunam in Punjab and his ashes were immersed in the Ganges River.

"Don't be serious, be sincere.”!!!

Speech by Chetan Bhagat in Symbiosis Institute of Management:-

Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a

marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no

point coming first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the

marbles. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life.

Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being

excited and alive, will start to die.

One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is

not to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a

pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another

50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so

worked up?

It's ok, bunk a few classes, goof up a few interviews, take leave from

work, fall in love. We are people, not programmed devices. :)

"Don't be serious, be sincere."!!!

Test - Facial Recognition - Interesting

 Facial Recognition

This is a test to see how well you can remember faces and when.

There are two parts A and B, and each part will have 12 photos of faces.

You only have a short time, 4 seconds, to see each face before the
program moves to the next face.

Part A will begin and when that is finished you can start Part B.

When Part B is finished, the test will begin.

The test will consist of showing 48 faces and below each face you will
have a choice of choosing whether you have seen the face, either in Part
A or in Part B, or whether or not you have seen the face at all.

After you have made you selection for face number 48 your score
will appear and you will be able to see how you scored.

Good luck!

Facial Recognition Test

Happy Earth Day...April 22

Happy Earth Day...April 22

Ten Ways to Save the Planet Without Losing Your Mind

Here are some small things we can do to help save the planet.
  1. Change a light bulb to a CFL or LED. They can take getting use to. If you don't like the CFL try the LED or the other way around. If you still don't like either, try putting them in your closet and other places you won't be as much. CFL bulbs consume around 65% - 75% less electricity than regular light bulbs.  And they last up to 10 times longer than regular light bulbs. LED use even less electricity and last even longer than CFL's.
  2. Use one less napkin. The average American uses an average of 2,200 paper napkins per year. If everyone in the U.S. used one less napkin a day, more than a billion pounds of napkins would be saved from landfills each year. For a bigger impact use recycled napkins or even cloth napkins for a bigger impact.
  3. Turn off your computer. Turning off your computer in place of sleep mode can save you 40 watt-hours per day. For bigger impact put your computer on a power strip and turn the power strip off when not in used to stop "vampire power."
  4. Use a laptop. Laptops use a quarter of the power of a desktop. For a bigger impact when buying a laptop look at the Apple MacBook line. They are made from largely aluminum, energy saving LED lit screens, and a reduction in toxic chemicals used.
  5. Use the both sides of the paper. Set your printer to two-sided printing. American businesses throw away 21 million tons of paper every year. Remember to recycle the paper when done. For a bigger impact use recycled paper when printing.
  6. Ditch one use water bottles. Almost 90% of plastic water bottles are not recycled! To make things worse plastic never decomposes. Buy a reusable bottle and refill it with filtered tap water. Tap water has higher EPA standards than bottled water. For a bigger impact ditch soda as well and go for tea or make your own soda with a Soda Club soda maker.
  7. Stop brushing while running. Running water while you brush your teeth uses on average five gallons a day. For a bigger impact use a tooth brush made from recycled plastic like the ones made by Preserve.
  8. Turn off the lights. If you are still using incandescent bulbs turn off the light every time you leave the room. CFL's are more affected by being turned on and off so turn off if you will be gone for more than 15 minutes. For a bigger impact use natural lighting during the day and turn off the lights all together.
  9. Set your cruise control. You can get up to 15% better mileage. Even with gas prices a bit lower these days is that really where you want your money going? For a bigger impact brake and accelerate slowly. You will save even more gas!
  10. Inflate your tires. Keep your tires properly inflated. You can improve mileage by more than 3%. Check them weekly for best results. For a bigger impact carpool. Just sharing 2 days a week can reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 1,590 a year.

Job vacancy....

Mother

When I came drenched in the rain,

My brother asked "Why don't you take an umbrella with you?"

My sister asked "You could have waited until it stopped?"

My Dad angrily said "Only after catching cold, you will realize."

But my MOTHER,  as she was drying my hair with her saree, was shouting
.

.
.
not at me  But at the RAIN

Hexaware Situation - Recession

We do not have plans to retrench people, but we will create a 'virtual

bench' which will comprise around 350 people who are currently non-billable.  Since there are no immediate billable opportunities for  them, we plan to retain them in the organization giving them time off  to improve their skills and get re-trained in skills which are in  higher demand. While these employees need not report to work, the  Company will give them a compensation equivalent to 50% of their basic  salary (total pay will be 20% of the gross salary). The virtual bench  will be implemented with immediate effect and it will be reviewed at  periodic intervals, so that the organization can explore opportunities  to absorb them as needed back into the mainstream. These employees  will continue to receive retirals (provident fund and gratuity) and  hospitalization insurance and life cover from the Company and their  service continuity will be protected as well.

We are also implementing a salary cut for our employees above certain levels across the organization. The salary reduction for Hexaware will range between 5 10 % and will be effective April 2009. The salaries of

employees at the entry level to employees up to G3 will not be  impacted while the senior most employees will be subject to a higher percentage cut. In India, grades G2/S2 and G3/S3 will not be affected, G4/S4 and G5/S5 will have a 5% cut, G6/S6 to G10/S10 will get a 8% cut and G11 and above  will be subject to a 10% cut.  All non- India employees will get a 5% salary reduction subject to local regulations. The salary reduction for Caliber Point will range between 2 5 % and will also be effective April 2009. At Caliber Point, all grades below C6, D7 and O7 will not be affected. Grades C6-C7, D7-D8 and O7-O8 will get a 2% reduction, grades C8-C11, D9-D13 and O9-O13 will get a 3% reduction and grades C12, D14, O14 and above will  get a 5 % reduction

As a result, the salaries of 40% of the total employees will be  unaffected. The entire situation will be reviewed at regular intervals. The annual performance appraisal process will take place like in the past. We  will continue focused competency development and training and re-skilling opportunities like before. Each of you will individually receive a revised compensation letter from HR shortly. Feel free to talk to your HR business partners for any further queries.

Blood Clots/Stroke - A little Information CAN SAVE

INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW........................

B
lood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters....S.T.R.

My nurse friend sent this and encouraged me to post it and spread the word.
I agree.

If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks

Seriously..

Please read:

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read this...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *
Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *
Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R
*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?
